The Mission of the Urban Minority Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Outreach Programs of Ohio is:

“To ensure that alcohol, tobacco, other drug services, and other related service provisions are available and accessible at an affordable cost for African and Hispanic/Latino Americans and that these services are rendered in a manner that addresses and responds to the cultural essence of African and Hispanic/Latino Americans.”

“To ensure that African and Hispanic/Latino Americans are aware of the implications, consequences and health-related harm that may result from alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, misuse or abuse and the serious short and long-term impact of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs on African and Hispanic/Latino American communities.”

“To ensure that the needs of the African and Hispanic/Latino American communities are at the forefront of local, state, and national agendas.”

“To ensure that African and Hispanic/Latino Americans seeking services from the social service delivery system are responded to in a respectful and humane manner, and to help service delivery systems understand and accept the premise that African and Hispanic/Latino Americans have an inherent right to retain their identities, make their own choices, and be self-directed individuals in their quest for qualitative prevention, treatment and recovery services.”

Lima-UMADAOP believes that ATOD and violence are best preventable through education. Prevention is education in action.

UMADAOP of Lima conducts the following specialized programming:

Coalition for Academic and Personal Excellence (C.A.P.E.) Mentoring and Tutoring Program-is an after school program for youth grades 1-12.  This program provides student tutors from local colleges and positive mentors from the Lima community.  The “Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs” program has been implemented into this after school program.  This program is another effective prevention program that will concentrate on the positive side of drug/alcohol prevention.  Why? Because just like the other drug prevention programs it also provides a lifetime alternative, building self-esteem, helping them respect themselves, adults and their environment, fostering family togetherness, improve communication, and develop new skills.  Fishing is a good alternative because it’s enjoyable and helps to relieve stress and gives them time and a place to think things out.
 

Peace Maker Project-is a health promotion project designed to evaluate a comprehensive, school based intervention that seeks to prevent violence among students from South, North, and West Middle schools; and Freedom, Lowell, Faurot, and South II Elementary schools.  The project is a multiple component health promotion intervention, with a community-based intervention that complements the school-based activities that will reduce aggressive behavior among targeted students.  The Peace Maker curriculum is used in the middle schools and the Making Allies Making Friends curriculum is used in the elementary schools.
 

Circle for Recovery Ohio-is a community-based program targeting minority males transitioning from prison to community supervision under the Ohio Adult Parole Authority.  The program focuses on relapse prevention and social reintegration services geared towards assisting the community based offender in becoming a productive member of society.  Lima-U.M.A.D.A.O.P. receives referrals from the Adult Parole Authority in Allen County as well as, the U.S. District Courts Federal Parole Department, Allen County Drug Court, and various community agencies.
 

Batterers Intervention Program-Perpetrators of domestic violence are taught to take responsibility for their actions, beliefs and attitudes that contribute to violence; and to develop non-violent alternatives in dealing with conflict.  This 13-week education program is conducted for both male and female offenders.
